Highlands and Islands Enterprise is committed to the growth of life sciences and has invested significantly in the development of state of the art infrastructure, advanced research and development, training and skills, business support and international trade and investment.

The built and natural environment in the Highlands and Islands offers considerable opportunities for the life sciences sector to grow. There are already over 80 active organisations in the region and several new buildings under construction which are specifically tailored for life sciences.

Enterprise Area designation

Locating at the Inverness Campus or the Enterprise Park, Forres will be of particular interest to businesses hoping to capitalise on the Enterprise Area designation, which was awarded by the Scottish Government in 2012.  The status offers added incentives including rates relief of up to £275,000 per business, simplified planning protocols and additional support for training and skills.

The range of life science locations across the Highlands and Islands can provide companies with incubation space, laboratory facilities, and office and commercial space within one of the world’s most scenic destinations.

Inverness Campus 


Opened in 2015, the Inverness Campus offers high quality facilities with excellent collaboration opportunities with the six universities on site as well as the site's 750 scientists and clinicians. Adjacent to one of Scotland's largest private sector life sciences employers Johnson and Johnson's LifeScan Scotland, a large teaching hospital and the innovative Centre for Health Science. The Campus offers a high quality, vibrant location for innovation, business development, collaboration and learning.

  • Centre for Health Science, Inverness 

Based in Inverness, the Centre for Health Science brings together public, private and academic sector to be a focus for excellence in health science and biotechnology. The NHS Highland Clinical Research Facility (one of five in Scotland) is located in the Centre.

European Marine Science Park, Argyll 


The £7.5m first phase of the European Marine Science Park in Oban is situated alongside the Scottish Association of Marine Science (part of the University of the Highlands and Islands). Malin House provides up to 20,000 sq ft of fully flexible laboratory and office space and incorporates marine science, research and development, education and commercial activity.

Alexander Graham Bell Centre, Elgin               

The £6.5m Alexander Graham Bell Centre in Elgin is a research, education and business hub for digital healthcare. An example of the region’s collaborative approach, the facility brings together a partnership between NHS Grampian, Moray College UHI and HIE.
